How to get flash in iPhone

Flash running on iPhone

A demo page of flash on iPhone

Apple iPhone is one of the most innovative products of the last decade. The phone has revolutionized the smart phone scenario and is the leading device in the field. Even Google’s recent “Google Phone” -Nexus One couldn’t pose any threat to the Apple’s magnum opus product. However good and popular may the iPhone be, there were some important missing features on it. The single most important plugin/application/feature that the iPhone was lacking was the ability of it to display Flash. There was no runtime for flash in iPhone and hence you couldn’t display any flash content on it. But that was right only until the “Gordon” got into fore.

Basically, Gordon is a Flash runtime Tobias Schneider has created using some clever programming in Javascript with SVG. A runtime can be described as a collection of software that allows the running of code inside it. A better example of it is the .NET framework. The .NET framework allows to run the applications written using Microsoft’s .NET languages. Similarly, Gordon allows the browser to play and run .swf  (shock wave flash) applications. So, inorder for the flash sites to play the .swf files they need to install the Gordon runtime.

Due to the support that has to be installed on the website side, it might become a big hindrance. Even with the hindrance, atleast the support is available now for some websites. So, this is a point to rejoice.

The Gordon script can be found out at GitHub and some of the demos can be found out at Paul Irish’s website
