Use DropBox to save bandwidth by hosting CSS and JS files

DropBox enables hosting Javascript and CSS files

Drop Box is one of the most innovative products, I have immediately fallen in love with. Drop Box operates on the basic principle of synchronizing the storage among computers and simultaneously in the cloud. The cloud part has made the Drop Box innovative product and is considered (arguably) as one of the gateways to the Cloud Hosting. That said, you can use Drop Box in different innovative ways. Today, I am going to show you how to use Drop Box to overcome the bandwidth problem on your server.

Everyone other internet user these days has become an owner of his website. The first problem with hosting a website is that when the website is hit by traffic, you run over the possibility of using all your bandwidth. To avoid this problem, you need to host your external javascript and CSS files somewhere else. Here comes the use of Drop Box to save your bandwidth by hosting Javascript and CSS files there.

The advantages of using Drop Box to host your Javascript and CSS files:

  • Low Bandwidth Usage
  • Reliability  and as DropBox is fast in serving files, your websites actually serve faster
  • As you are externally sourcing the JS and CSS files, you can use the same files over different domains enabling you to load the pages even quicker :)
  • There is no Bandwidth limitation at all in Drop Box and hence you need not worry about eating up your bandwidth.

So, how do you host your Javascript and CSS on Drop Box? Follow this step-by-step process:

  1. First sign-up for a new account on Drop Box (That’s my referral link and both you and I get 250MB extra if you sign up using that link).
  2. Don’t go over the hassle of downloading the client etc. (You can of course download it, but this particular process doesn’t need the client.)
  3. Now log into you account, and go to Public folder.
  4. Make two new folders by names CSS and JS over there.
  5. Now upload your Javascript files to JS folder and CSS files to CSS folder.
  6. When you want to use a JS or CSS files as source, just navigate to the respective file and click to get a drop down menu. Select “Copy Public Link” and that will be the link you need to reference in your webpages.

That said, if you want to try out a reliable webhost, I would recommend  Hostgator
