Twitter affected by stalkdaily/Mikeyy worm

Twitter has become the buzzword of the web of late. It is not an exggeration to say that every tech blog now-a-days contains atleast one post on twitter. As everyone knows, in the internet world, with great fame comes great spam. One such instance was recorded recently when twitter got affected by a worm. The worm now named as "Stalkdaily worm" reminds of the Samy worm in the good old days of MySpace .

While many people were feasting on the Easter weekend, a worm took its stage on the twitter community. The worm apparently promoting the website StalkDaily(dot)com (do not visit the website ) has already got 4 variations by now. It all started at 2AM on Saturday when around 4 accounts were created to spread the worm on Twitter. Twitter security team has soon come into action and fixed it. It has fixed around 90 accounts which were compromised.

But again there was one more attack with new posting and twitter again fixed this. This continued till 4 generations of StalkDaily worms have been created. The worms have changed into Mikeyy worms promoting Mikeyy to be hired by twitter. Twitter was continuously combating to take care of this worm.

Early reports indicate that the worm was created by a 17year old named Mickeyy, who is the owner of StalkDaily.com , and was already involved in XSSing on Stickam. It appears this worm has been totally fixed and the JS file responsible to this - http://www.stalkdaily.com/ajax.js , is now giving a 404 error meaning the virus has been removed. So twitter is safe for now.

Interesting stuff. I agree one of the attractive things about Twitter is its emphasis on simplicity. But I wonder too if there is such a thing as being too simple, and therefore providing too little information to visitors, particularly new ones. Just a thought.

If this 17-year old kid has pulled it off, maybe Twitter should look at their security measures. Millions are using twitter and an attack like that could really spread like wildfire. Good work though on beating the attack. Keep Twitter rocking!
