hi, maybe i am just a bit old, but i only use facebook to reaquaint myself with old friends. I had never thought to use it with the intent of making new ones! I need to think about this, do i need any more friends???

It can be usefull for promote something, but for personal use it’s really useless.
Some tips above may be intruding or a form of stalking to others if your profile is personal or just you. I believe most tips above apply if your profile is for a business or if you represent a group entity so people will understand that you are trying to be popular because obviously your are advertising your company/group/etc.

These are good tips. Of course is stupid to add people you don' know to your real profile to only show your friends that you have more friends on facebook than they. However it's good for some internet marketing campaign or creating groups like "fans of cola" etc.
